KNOW HOW TO PREVENT TOOTH DECAY

What is tooth decay?

Tooth decay is the destruction of tooth stucture affecting both  enamel (hard outer layer of tooth) and dentin layer of tooth.

How does decay occur?

Decay/cavity occurs when bacteria in our mouth acts on sugar in food and drinks that are left on the tooth surface producing acid. The bacteria, food debris, acid and saliva combine to form a sticky layer called plaque. The acid in plaque dissolves the enamel creating holes/cavities.

As the saying goes, prevention is always better than cure.

Here are 7 easy ways to prevent decay

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride-containing toothpaste.
  • Use dental floss or interdental cleaners to clean in-between your teeth. Avoid toothpicks.
  • Eat nutritious and balanced meals and limit snacks. Avoid sticky foods. If sticky foods are eaten, brush your teeth immediately afterwards.
  • Check with your dentist about use of supplemental fluoride (varnish or gel), which strengthens your teeth.
  • Ask your dentist about dental sealants (a plastic protective coating) applied to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth (molars) to protect them from decay.
  • Drink fluoridated water. At least a pint of fluoridated water each day is needed to protect children from tooth decay.
  • Visit your dentist once in six months for professional cleanings and oral exam.
