Why does a dental veneer need replacement?

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers made up of ceramic or Porcelain are tooth-colored thin shells which are helpful to fix dental aesthetic problems.  Typically, the veneers are applicable in treating the chipped and stained front teeth by fixing the material over the tooth with an adhesive material.

In general, the porcelain veneers are highly durable and are persists for 15 years. They can be prolonged for more than 20 years if they are handled properly with care.

Otherwise, Veneer replacement is needed to maintain the smile aesthetics restored with dental veneers. In this post, our Dentists have explained the common circumstances that push one to replace his/her porcelain veneer.

1) Cracks or Damage in the Veneers

Even though the veneers are highly durable, the base materials with which the veneers are fabricated are fragile. Hence the dental veneers are highly prone to chip, crack and damage. If a person who had veneers met with an accident or hard blow over the mouth, then the fixed veneer would wear down.

Apart from such unexpected injuries and accidents, habits like clenching of teeth and teeth grinding also break the veneers.

2) Tooth Decay under the Veneer

The front surface of a tooth alone can be wrapped with veneers. The gum surfaces and back surfaces will be visible. Those regions will be infected by bacteria in the mouth if they are not properly cleaned. It is clear that tooth cavity is possible even in the veneer fixed tooth.

In such cases, the existing veneer should be removed and replaced with a new dental veneer.

3) Loose Dental Veneers

Both porcelain and ceramic veneers are glued over a tooth with the help of cementing material.  The cementing agents become weak or loose over a period of time. When the veneer become loose and unstable, oral bacteria will infect the natural tooth beneath the cosmetic appliance. Such bacterial invasion leads to plaque build-up and decay. Veneer replacement is the only solution to elude those side effects.

4) Tooth Stains

You know that the veneers are stain-resistant. Even though the veneers cannot get stained or discolored, the underlying tooth can. When the tooth beneath the porcelain veneers discolored, it differentiates the veneer fixed tooth from the neighboring teeth, As the veneers cannot be whitened with teeth whitening treatment, replacing veneers is required to overcome such aesthetic flaws.

5) Poor Workmanship in fixing veneers

It occurs in exceptional cases. In general, the veneers are fabricated as per the tooth size and customized before attached to the tooth. When the veneer is larger than the tooth size or dos not fit with the tooth, it will cause intense pain.

Similarly, if the cosmetic appliance is not fixed properly, it will lead to various hazards like tooth decay and others like we have discussed above. Replacing those veneer with a new one is required during those situations.

6) Gum Recession

Similar to dental caries, gum infection also occurs with poor oral hygiene. When the gum regions around the veneered tooth are infected, it will cause gum recession. Then the underlying regions of that tooth are exposed. It leads to tooth sensitivity. Then the veneer has to be replaced in order to close the visible soft regions.

Conclusion

The longevity of dental veneers can be extended with effective dental care. Car for veneers is not a tough thing. It is same as cleaning your natural teeth.

Avoid abrasive toothpaste and toothbrush with hard bristles because they may damage or dull the veneer. Similarly, avoid open bottles with teeth and nail biting. These will also damage the veneers.
